Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is a technology of practice with a long sacred history in India. For thousands of years, the Gurus of the practice forbade its teachings to the uninitiated. Yogi Bhajan, who was a master of this practice, moved to the US in 1968, and had a vision to build a great school of Kundalini Yoga in the West that any person could begin regardless of religious, cultural or spiritual background. This is what he has accomplished, and now there are many teachers and students worldwide.
Kundalini Yoga has been called the ‘Yoga of Awareness’. The main goals are to open the heart, clear and strengthen the energy body and the aura, and to awaken the latent energy (kundalini energy) at the base of the spine. This is accomplished by Asana, Kriya, Mantra, and Breathwork. Awakening this energy is the awakening of deep awareness, self-healing, radiance, and inner peace.
The term ‘Kriya’ means ‘completed action’. So each Kriya is founded on a purposeful intent to create a specific biochemical and neurological shift in the body. A Kriya can be one or more movements or poses combined with breathwork (pranayama), drishti (focusing the eyes and intention), and mudra. Kundalini yoga classes typically have a warmup series, a specific Kriya, one or more Mantras, and a Savasana. Each class is designed to support a particular intent within the body.
I have been practicing yoga for more than 20 years, including Kundalini, Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram, and Restorative Yoga. Though I didn’t know what it was at the time, my very first experience with yoga was Kundalini Yoga. My first yoga teacher came to our dance classes to teach us techniques to be healthier, more limber, and to release stress and tension. She was a small woman, all in white, with a turban. I was 16. I would leave class with an overwhelming self-love, peace, and energy. I loved the practice, but after our few classes with her, I didn’t experience it again for another 12 years.
I came back to Kundalini Yoga again in 1999 because I was in the healing process after a life-threatening illness. I chose it intuitively because I remember the peace and energy I felt after those first classes in my youth. I began with a very short daily practice until I could eventually extend it to an hour or more. Kundalini Yoga has been with me since then, 15 years later. While I still practice Vinyasa, Restorative, and Bikram styles, Kundalini Yoga is my daily practice.
